Painted Skies

A boy falls in love with Death’s daughter. What could possibly go wrong?

Who knew childhood ideas could span over 20 years?

Painted Skies is surprisingly a lifelong project of mine. These characters have been in my life since I was a little girl first realizing I could make my own worlds with my own hands. While they’ve changed a lot over the past two decades, what hasn’t changed is my love for them.

In 2015 I started my webcomic Die Erste Liebe, but after writing its sequel Painted Skies in 2017 and falling off the webcomic horse with my tattoo apprenticeship, I let the story simmer in my brain. After years of thought, I realized the only way I could tell this story right was to combine the two together into one solid piece of work.

So what’s it about?

It sound simple…but it’s much more than that.

Painted Skies is a tragic love story between a young man trying to move on from his own past and the daughter of a god so desperate to run from her future. A war is raging between two women, the kindhearted yet destructive Aedela, Queen of Nephilim and the cold and callous Afina, bride of the God of Death. With Afina’s children having gone missing, Aedela calls upon her son Makenshi to go find them and keep an eye on the pair. But things take a turn when the rather reserved Makenshi ends up falling for Death’s daughter, the abrasive yet sweet Night Avalar.

Torn between his loyalty to his mother and his flourishing love for the mysterious Night, Makenshi is forced to decide whether he wants to go back home or live out the romantic fairy tale he had always dreamed of.

But things aren’t all as they seem, and one can’t expect to meddle with the gods and come out completely unscathed…

Inspired by Greek mythology, religion and magick, my own personal trauma and years of consuming Final Fantasy games, Painted Skies is basically my love letter to the fairy tales and love stories that inspired me my entire life. You can read its current form under the webcomic tab here on my site.

Carmen Concept art

A bruja, a sex worker, and the daughter of a cult leader all walk into a bar…

Original conceived in 2016, Carmen is a side story project that has been worked on here and there over the past few years.

The story follows Ursula, a dancer who gets caught in between our world and the underground of witchcraft and religious cults. After the man she was suppose to accompany one night was killed in front of her by the icy hitwoman Carmen, Ursula leaves behind a life of abuse and restrictions to follow Carmen on her journey to return to the coven she betrayed years ago.

Following the two women is a young girl named Charlie, daughter of the leader of one of the most disturbed Christian cults ever to have existed. With a long standing rivalry with witches dating back hundreds of years ago, Charlie must prove her worth in spite of already excelling at everything required of her. Killing Carmen is her top priority. If she can’t succeed, she’s nothing.

Love, loss of faith, sexuality, ancestral trauma, moving on from the past and killing the former self. Carmen carries all of this and more. My eventual goal will be to create a short comic, but in the meantime please enjoy these conceptual illustrations.
